5 reasons to upgrade your server

You may have heard about the recent Microsoft announcements alerting businesses of vulnerabilities in some of their On-Premise Exchange Servers.

Whilst OAS has taken every step to mitigate risk for affected customers by deploying server upgrades as soon as our team was made aware of the issue, it is important to understand the need to update On-Premise Servers.

Here are our top five reasons why you should ensure your On-Premise Server is up to date.

1. Security

Ageing systems are more vulnerable to viruses and exploitation by hackers which means valuable information could be stolen or compromised. This is due to outdated security systems and missing or unavailable security fixes. Even utilising later versions of security products will have limited effectiveness as they won’t be compatible with older servers.

2. Performance and Maintenance cost

On average, server performance declines by 14% each year. By the fifth year, a server only has 40% of the performance left compared to when it was new. Lower performance can increase unplanned downtime and may increase support cost. The time and money you may be spending on maintaining your system over time can often exceed the cost of buying new equipment or going to the cloud.

3. Business growth

An On-Premise Server is fit for purpose at the time you bought. But what if your business grows and you require more room to store your data? On-premise Servers offer no scalability - the only way to get more storage is to purchase more hardware, which can be an issue if you don’t have enough physical space to do so. Scalable and consumption-based models like the cloud may be more suitable for those businesses looking to grow. To find out more about the cloud click here.

4. Compatibility

Aside from the obvious risks of vulnerability, an older server could cause software and hardware compatibility issues since newer applications might not be compatible with older systems. Sometimes, when servers get outdated, they are no longer supported by the vendor which means that potential security vulnerabilities won’t be addressed.

5. IT Support Ability

Most IT Service Providers will not support outdated systems and hardware due to the added maintenance and the fact that most other systems and software will not be compatible. By upgrading your IT infrastructure, you can potentially save thousands of dollars thanks to higher performance, consolidation, management efficiency, and improved reliability.
